Christmas Florida Style

Captiva Mucky Duck XMas

I grew up in Connecticut, so I was akin to celebrating Christmas New England style. Hot cocoa, cold-weather garb, roaring fireplaces, even the occasional sledding excursion. So when my parents bought a place in Florida and we started to spend Christmas there, it was a bit of an adjustment, a good one, but albeit, quite different from Christmases of yesteryear.

Instead loading up with mittens and hats for a walk, we now load up on SPF and head down to the beach. And at least once during the Christmas week, we make our way to Captiva's famed restaurant, The Mucky Duck,

Mucky Duck

The Mucky Duck is a bit of an institution on Captiva, the island adjacent to Sanibel. It's got good food, good beers, and always a fun vibe, especially during the holidays when they display Surfing Santa.

Christmas Captiva Style

Near the Mucky Duck is the very sweet Chapel By The Sea. The chapel's caretakers adorn the church and its yard with great holiday decor from lights, garlands, and wreaths.

I love the fiesta-colored lights draped among the trees.

The interior is sweet, too. Ceiling fans are a must down here.

More colored lights hung between the Australian pines.

Now I'm ready for a Corona with extra lime.

Captiva Signs

There are lots places to eat here on Captiva. Just choose your favorite pastel sign option.

Captiva Colors

A mix and match of pastels seems to be an obligatory decorating style.

Captiva Dining

Here's the Key Lime Bistro, a favorite of B's and mine. In San Francisco, you don't get to eat outdoors much, at least without a line up of heaters, so we when we travel, we opt for anywhere where we can eat a meal outdoors.

B on Buckley Beach

And here's my handsome husband. The infamous B. He's enjoying a little sunset happy hour, Sanibel style.

Sanibel Sunset

Though I miss traditional New England Christmases, there's nothing like 80 degree weather, walks on the beach, and an adult beverage in hand at sunset.

Merry Christmas, all, where 'er you be. Sending you great holiday wishes from the Florida gulf.
